Frequently asked questions

What is a Base64 image?

Base64 encodes the bytes of an image as plain text. Inside a Data URL such as data:image/png;base64,…, the image can be embedded directly in HTML, CSS or JSON without a separate file.

Which image formats can I convert?

PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, SVG, BMP and AVIF files up to 15 MB.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read by your browser, so the image and the generated code stay on your device.

Why is the Base64 code larger than the image file?

Base64 uses four text characters for every three bytes, so the encoded text is about 33% larger than the original file. It works best for small images such as icons and logos.

What is the difference between Data URL and Base64 only?

A Data URL includes the data:image/…;base64, prefix and can be used directly as an image source. Base64 only gives the raw encoded string, which suits APIs and JSON fields that add the prefix themselves.

Is the converter free?

Yes. It is free to use and does not require an account.
