Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 240 is 15 ÷ 100 × 240 = 36.

How do I work out percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. Going from 50 to 65 is (65 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = a 30% increase. A negative result is a decrease.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change compares a new value with an original one, so the direction matters. Percentage difference compares two values on equal terms by dividing the gap between them by their average, so the order does not matter.

How do I find the original price before a percentage was added?

Use the X is P% of what calculator. If 120 is 80% of a number, the number is 120 ÷ 0.8 = 150. To remove a 20% markup from 120, find what 120 is 120% of, which is 100.

Can I type numbers with commas?

Yes. Commas used as thousand separators, such as 1,250,000, are understood. A single comma followed by one or two digits, such as 12,5, is read as a decimal point.

Is the percentage calculator free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and all calculations run in your browser.
