Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
Words are split using your browser's built-in language rules, so contractions like don't count as one word and languages without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, are also handled. Punctuation and emoji on their own are not counted as words.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations and speeches.
Do emoji count as one character?
Yes. Characters are counted as the symbols you see, so an emoji, a flag or a letter with an accent counts as one character, even if it is stored as several code points.
What is the readability score?
It is the Flesch reading ease score, based on sentence length and syllables per word. Higher scores are easier to read; 60 to 70 is plain English. The score is designed for English text.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
Your text is never uploaded. It is counted in your browser, and a draft is kept in this browser's local storage so it survives a page refresh. Clear removes the draft.
Is the word counter free?
Yes. It is free to use and does not require an account.
